XStreamOS

Last Update: 2018-03-24 02:03 UTC

XStreamOS and XStream Desktop are Sonicle's effort to maintain a distribution of the illumos kernel (originally derived from OpenSolaris), featuring the ZFS file system, Crossbow network architecture, virtualisation and zones, as well as a customised LXDE desktop. It also strives to develop and contribute to the illumos kernel. Sonicle, a company located in Italy, also maintains two other full-featured products - XStream Server and XStream Storage.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Very snappy (quick) lightweight (minimalistic) desktop.
works nice in VirtualBox,
has a few bugs,
like xterm crashes and some menu items like "Preferred Applications" and "Keyboard and Mouse" not functioning.

having a media tab in the menu would be nice

also when using "pkg search" you get error http protocol error: Unknown error code: 503 reason: Service Unavailable
(note that the system doesn't have a graphical package manager)

Also like any Solaris based systems (Solaris 11.3 or OpenIndiana) when installing on real hardware
audio defaults to wrong device (audiohd#0), to switch default to audiohd#1 (to have sound in Firefox)
remove existing links
# rm /dev/audio
# rm /dev/audioctl
# rm /dev/dsp
create new
# ln -s /dev/sound/1 /dev/audio
# ln -s /dev/sound/1ctl /dev/audioctl
# ln -s /dev/dsp1 /dev/dsp

to see settings before/after change use
$ ls -l /dev/audio
$ ls -l /dev/audioctl
$ ls -l /dev/dsp
to see available options
$ cat /dev/sndstat
$ ls /dev/sound

also like other Solaris based systems, finding a modern WiFi card that works seams near impossible.
