VyOS is a community fork of Vyatta, a Linux distribution discontinued in 2013. It is a network operating system that provides software-based network routing, firewall and VPN functionality. VyOS is based on Debian; its features include the ability to run on both physical and virtual platforms, and support for para-virtual drivers and integration packages for virtual platforms. VyOS was completely free to download and use until the release of version 1.2.0 in January 2019 when the project turned commercial, providing the operating system with various levels of support subscriptions. Daily "rolling" images are still available for free download though.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I'm someone that uses VyOS both privately and commercially and it does practically everything I could want it to. As I happen work for an ISP, one of our most important use cases is to be able to run full BGP tables without any issues. We have been using VyOS for this for years now and it has worked absolutely flawlessly.

Simple to learn, and simple to set up -- I'd definitely recommend VyOS to anyone needing a stable routing platform.

Replace all cisco routers with it and what schould i say? It ´s running faster than any of the two year old ones.

I use BGP and OSPF in our internal networks. In two years i had never any downtime.
VyOS is running on low cost consumer hardware with server class intel quad gbit nics.

Great project!
