VectorLinux is a small, fast, Intel based Linux operating system for PC style computers. The creators of VectorLinux had a single credo: keep it simple, keep it small and let the end user decide what their operating system is going to be. What has evolved from this concept is perhaps the best little Linux operating system available anywhere. For the casual computer user there is a lightening-fast desktop with graphical programs to handle daily activities from web surfing, sending and receiving email, chatting on IRC to running an FTP server. The power user will be pleased because all the tools are there to compile programs, use the system as a server or perhaps the gateway for home or office computer network. Administrators will be equally pleased because of the small size and memory requirements, so the operating system can be deployed on older machines that have long been forgotten.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

In order to try and find a distro suitable for my old laptop I ended with VectorLinux. I installed the 64-bit version.

I like to distro hop and I had never tried this one. Boy, what a relief this one is. It's fast, boots quickly and works like a charm.
This distro is running SysV. I had never tried that one either.

In contrast to my previous distro (Manjaro) which often got stuck on my machine, haven't I experienced that with VectorLinux

Pros on this version:
- Fast
- Simple
- Stable

- Not all applications are up to date
- I do not know if there are any security issues.
- Small application repository

I bought an old HP mini 2133 that turned out to be a curse. Usually there are no problems when using the most lightweight distros, for my old mini netbooks. However, this one had a problem with the b43 firmware for wireless card. Win 10 would not start install (even though it is within the requirements), my usual Bodhi Linux would refuse to go on with install and it was the same for several other distro's. In the end, AntiX would install and run wired connection, but no wireless. The only distro able to find and run wireless ended up being Kali Linux (which is too heavy for this computer to work properly) and Vector Linux! I got the idea to try after I read another review saying it finds and installs old Broadcom drivers.

So, Vector is a lifesaver for old, stubborn Netbooks. It is very fast and can be configured to look good with just a few clicks. The cons now is that I have to learn to use this system and I dont find it to be easy, not being an experienced Linux user. There is another thing worth mentioning, I had problems with the install freezing at the end when it sets passwords. After reading up on it on the forums, it seems that your username must not have capital letters and the password for login and root must not be the same.
