ReactOS RSS Feed DistroWatch.com: ReactOS

Last Update: 2019-03-04 15:29 UTC

ReactOS is a free and open-source operating system based on the best design principles found in the Windows NT architecture. Written completely from scratch, ReactOS is not a Linux-based system and it shares none of the UNIX architecture. The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on a Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow people to use it as an alternative to Windows without the need to change software they are used to.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I had hoped that ReactOS would be a good alternative to Windows, but so far I have not been able to get it working. I tried the last two ReactOS version, both Live and Install and it only worked one time on only one computer. I tried ReactOS on at least eight(8) different computers and it started correctly just one single computer for one time. I tried the second time on that computer and ReactOS failed to work. Remember that the compute I am saying this about is the computer where it did work that one time.

I get a boatload of ReactOS errors regardless of which computer I use. ReactOS will not book in all but one of my computers and when it does boot, the desktop locks. The single time it did work briefly only happened as I mention above. I'll still try each new future version of ReastOS with the hopes it will finally work.

I work on computers and I can tell you that Windows regardless of the version crashes a lot of computers. Most of the time this is due to Windows updates. Microsoft as added in an uninstaller for Windows 10 updates just in case the update fails. This extra process to remove updates does not work as good as you may think. Just last month I had to reinstall Windows 10 for a friend just because of a failed update.

The reason I brought up Windows OS's is because ReactOS seems to be a good alternative to install and use Windows based programs. If only the ReactOS developers could get it to actually work. Right now, ReactOS is broken and I cannot recommend it to anybody. When I tried to use ReastOS for the first time, I was hoping that a OS would be developed that could run Windows programs, but to do that, ReactOS has to work before I can try using any Windows software. That's why I only gave it a one rating. Maybe someday it will work, but until then, it does not work for me on at least eight(8) different computers. Sorry...

My experience so far is limited to running ReactOS in VirtualBox. Mostly this works well, with a few glitches. On the positive side it was easy to setup, it boots super fast, and can idle all day without an issue. Opera browser works, as does ABi WORD.

On the downside, just not that much that can be done with it yet, and my past attempts to install on the hardware were unsuccessful. It's been some time since trying that so will give it another shot.

As with other OS types outside the mainstream, one has to ask why build it? I think the ReactOS goal is to someday be capable of running Windows software (like the WINE project for Linux). Since I see value in the concept and admire their persistence I gave a rating of 7.

If I were rating a top end Linux distro and it ran like this it would get a 3, but ReactOS is different, and deserves credit for what it is so far. It's worth a try in vbox, and worth tracking their progress.

Only can be made to work in virtual box mode, as that it wont boot into a live usb or cd/dvd as that it gets to swenum.sys and hangs or BSOD depending on how it's chosen from the grub type menu.
I have tried it on 3 different laptops and it does the same thing 2 intel based and 1 AMD based.. it's not the laptops and or how the OS is written to a usb, as I have as well tried rufus and unbootin and both do the same.. no real change from either.
