Puppy Linux

Last Update: 2019-04-11 06:22 UTC

Puppy Linux is yet another Linux distribution. What's different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full-featured. Puppy boots into a ramdisk and, unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, it loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device, CDROM, Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk, floppy disks, internal hard drive. It can even use a multisession formatted CD-RW/DVD-RW to save everything back to the CD/DVD with no hard drive required at all.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I like the latest puppyLinux. One feature that I like is the RedShift. If you work at nights or in low light surroundings, This adjustment makes it easy on the eyes.
An additional thing I found out is that you can easily control the brightness and the tint of the monitor by checking the boxes in the RedShift program.

Both 32 and 64 bit versions of puppyLinux 8.0 are great. I use them as my main computer program and at times I use them as a toolbox when I am working on computers. In that case I put them on flash drives or micro sd card.

Once I got used to using puppyLinux, it was easy to use the later versions. All of them have upgrades over each program. Version 8 has the most colors. So it makes it easy to see what each program is doing.

My one desire. Make an easy to set up add printer program. Something like what I see on Linuxmint or MxLinux. These only take 1-2 minutes to set up and print a test sheet.

Other than that I rate this as a 9 out of 10. Do the easy to set up printer and I would give it full Marks!

Revived an ASUS eee 900 using the BionicPup32 8.0 called 'UPupBB-18.05 Bionic Beaver'. Virtually no other distro can be so easily or readily installed on this miniature 'laptop'. Tried and failed with quite a few other distros during installation due to the tiny storage available in the eee (less than 4 GB), or the distros could not recognize the video/display, or they couldn't handle pre-installation partitioning, or they failed at the location determination phase, or couldn't sense the wi-fi, etc & etc. The developers have done a great job with this installer, and for Linux newbies and dilettantes, the installer decides whether a person uses Linux or goes back to Windows. Not only that, but the developers have not dumbed it down, squeezed in all the most practical programs and utilities, while keeping the installation from becoming bloated. For these reasons, this distro deserves high praise and kudos.

Love the portability of being on USB memory that I can boot to almost any computer. It's quick, it doesn't have unnecessary software. Perfect for a single user.
I wish they had a tablet version. If there is one, I don't know about it. But this is perfect for Tablets. Fast, and friendly.

I've used it since 5.4 and still think it's the best.

I thank you all who helped make it happen and who keep improving it.
