Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Great hyper visor solution for hobbyist on a budget.

Yes it has its flaws and by no means perfect but brings redundant storage and multi node capability to the masses.

The PROS:

1. Nice usable web interface and fast unlike its other contenders cough cough VMware
2. Low resource usage - for a basic start of virtualisation
3. Live migration - storage on CEPH or NFS or even ZFS
4. OS is debian so easy to get to grips with and stable
5. Free*
6. Regular updates and new features
7. Runs on pretty much any common PC parts - thanks to debian

The CONS:

1. Nagging subscription when logging into the web interface
2. Not all functionality in the web interface - disk partitioning
3. Proxmox ISO is not hybrid so pain to install from a USB, also recovery is unique to proxmox.
4. Resource pool does nothing really, so have to manually or script qm to change cpu limit and memory shares.

Overall a great project and glad it is around, as have tried a few like Ovirt and basic kvm manager which has worst problems and high resource usage.

So thanks to the Proxmox Team!

Tries to wrap KVM into a usable out of the box installation and operations interface. Somewhat manages that. It is basically what ESX + VCenter was around version 4.0, which was around 6-7 years ago.

CEPH requires some serious tuning to get it right. As of 5.1 moving VMs between storage and compute resources is still a two step process and needs to cross on shared storage first.

Overall it fits somewhere in the very small/lab/hobby setup and KVM can be customized by very large ISPs with deep pockets to fit theirs needs, so in between it is kind of lost.

So far has not been stable under load on some very decent hardware (SSDs, 40 cores, 100GB+ of RAM. 10K$ servers X 8). Logless reboots happen (hypervisor level). Questions on forum goes unanswered.

Open source is free if your time is worth nothing. If SLAs are involved, look for other solutions.

I don't own stocks in VMware, Msft or others, they have never even bought me a T-Shirt.
