Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I started using Pinguy OS with the 10.10 release, back in 2010. It was THE bridge I needed between the Windows and Linux ecosystems. I had puttered around with Ubuntu releases, BSD distributions, failed miserably with Arch derivatives, etc, and just about gave up on Linux as more of a great idea rather than a daily driver.

I found Pinguy OS, and it worked. It simply WORKED and it worked well! I could go the route of a mostly free and open source ecosystem while still being able to game and ween myself off Windows as a default. The fact that I could do and play nearly anything with Pinguy OS that I could with Windows seriously set me on the path to full Linux citizenship today. (Google web apps may have something to do with that, too, if we are all being honest.) And it allowed me all of this as a brand new, untried and untested Linux user.

Two days ago, I saw that the wonderful developer of Pinguy OS had released a beta after many long years, and I immediately wiped the PopOS install from my laptop and installed the 18.04_beta. Again, even in the beta, things work wonderfully. Are there polishes that need to happen before full release? Maybe. But I can say that this works as well in beta as many full release distributions out there. And it still retains its signature style and feel, which is part of what helped me jump into the world of Linux in the first place.

works fine - some finishing works should be done - but all in all a good work.

Few years ago I did play for quite long period the Pinguy 11 something, and I do remember
that it gave me tremendous positive impression the level of the detailed work was given on this distro. Not only the distro as such but also the functionality and the stability of the whole "thing"
was amazing as for [one man show] product. I remember that I kept experimenting with a lot of install-uninstall and other "weird ways" till the total collapse of the system and then back again.
By that time I was sure that the engineers were lets say Germans metaforically ofcauese, [I knew they weren't]... To make short the story the next version was a total disaster. Everything
was working but it was like trying to run WIN7 on 1gb. The current version it's much worse.
everything "runs" but, like a snail. Unbelievablly heavy and compicated, even without Unity, even with some old implementations the "thing" was tormenting my HD so I kept it only for two days and I had enough asking my self what has hapened to that greate mind of "that" distro.
I guess that it will perform much better on a SSD machine. But then the big QUESTION...
