Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

(Small remark: I am using the version 2019.0 which was just released a few days ago)

I am using this distribution, because I have looked at many distributions without systemd, and it seems that it is the one that I need.

It works fine (network, browser, text editor, sound, screen) on a small desktop PC from 2016, on ethernet cable. (I have not tested wifi)

I have installed the palemoon browser downloaded as tarball, from the Palemoon website (in the live session). It works fine, and Youtube works too.

There is Libreoffice on the Live ISO. It seems to be working OK.

I do not use it for 'security testing', my purpose is only to use a distro 'without systemd' for desktop use.

So I could not rate it for the purpose of 'security'.

Some minor things were not working, but not important for me:
- the keyboard setting at boot time (this can be done from Xfce)
- verifying the files at boot time (but I may have made a mistake) but one can boot without verifying

Pros:

- it does not have Systemd (OpenRC instead) for 'those who care about it'

Cons:

- I do not know, because everything seems to work, for me at least.

I hope this is right one the iso harden one. Boot fine , but a small error when asking for password. It keeps rejecting your password to get in any farther in. I was wrong to not continue. Neither fix the bug or bypass it. I wanted it to work.

Pentoo was once my go-to rescue, testing live CD/USB.

Sadly, these days they really could lift their game with testing on wider hardware and release cycles.
To their credit I still use some of the older releases for hardware support that magically has been mangled in recent editions.

When competing in an ecosystem alongside Kali and Blackarch, it's hard to compete when you are a little fish in a Pacific-Ocean-sized pond.

It still remains an awesome setup/Live environment that doesn't tax the optical drive or resources even when not a RAM disc, but some issues lately with modern (and ancient) hardware that has me using it less than what would otherwise be my exclusive go-to Live environment.

The issues are also those that are not that easy to excuse from what I've seen when I've dug down into it, and my hardware was relatively common. The hypocrite that I am, I've not submitted bug reports OR supported development, I've just been a selfish user who submits reviews like this! :) :( So really take my advise with a grain of salt, one from that Pacific-Ocean-sized pond.
