Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

2018.1 Xfce Community Edition, no version selection for 2018.1, ignore the "apt" version selection.

Pros: LOVE the Xfce community edition, whoever does it does a great job, needs a few packages removed or added here and there but so does every distro. If the Xfce GUI settings are not your cup of tea, it can be tuned to taste. PCLOS has mulitmedia and browser choices other distros don't, that's a huge plus. If you're addicted to the latest kernel, they're easy to add or remove, there's a good choice of old/new/LTS/latest stable. RPM distro that has incorporated apt package management, works remarkable well. Lots of user friendly settings and wizard-like system tweakers, converted MS users will feel at home.

Cons: The only one I can think of, is sadly they have a smallish testing team, so the occasional breakage or bug slips through the cracks, not often, but it happens.

Overall, PCLOS has been around for ages, and it does what it's supposed to. I prefer the Xfce desktop because it's simple, light, and easily customized, more complicated and 'fat' desktops are more prone to problems.

Thanks for reading my review.

After my old laptop (HP Pavilion something, with processor AMD Turion 64-bit – 4 gb ram – 320 gb hd - nVIDIA graphics card and wi-fi), became almost unusable from viruses (until then, win7 was the operating system of this laptop), PCLOS was the only distro (tested ubuntu, lubuntu, opensuse, and others), which recognized the whole hardware and I was able to work again on it. That time (April 2013) used the LXDE version.

Now in my new laptop (i3 5010u – 8gb ram – 500 gb hd), installed PCLOS MATE 64-bit, since July 2016 and working without any problem up to today. Very stable, new kernels installed when available (now running 4.16.5 and I have also 4.16.4, 4.9.92 and 4.9.87 for testing) and not any heat detected. Installed also in my netbook (intel Atom N2600 – 2 gb ram – 320 gb hd), MATE 64-bit, since September 2017. Running well in this machine, too. Not any problem during installation of the PCLOS. Not spent to much time to customize to my needs and install greek language. I am not using any extra repositories other than the PCLOS itself. Hibernation working good (sometimes the laptop working for 10-15 days without shut it down), bluetooth ok (my two cell phones connected and send and receive photos). With ddCopy, I am able to make live usb with any distro I want for testing, very easy.

Started my Linux life in 2008 with ubuntu, but after few years (2012) stopped using it due to problems (mainly with wi-fi every time a new version installed - I use only laptops, not desktops). Wired internet worked ok (sometimes, even wired internet not worked with ubuntu) but wireless, not worked at all. This thing never happened with PCLOS.

No cons. I have stopped looking for the proper distro when found PCLOS and recommend it to everyone, new or experienced Linux user.

Pros: Very stable. No problems. The desktop is very intuitive and logical. It is easy to work with. Help is available if there are any questions about how things can or should be done.

Cons: It is very stable. Not a lot of improvements. There are few problems, therefore not much discussion about it. There is little need for fancy new features, because it does what it is supposed to do.
