OviOS Linux

Last Update: 2019-08-22 03:02 UTC

OviOS Linux is an independent, storage OS which combines open source technologies to provide a dedicated, performance-oriented storage system. The goal is to keep OviOS Linux a pure storage, appliance-like OS. It targets users and admins who need a stable out-of-the-box iSCSI, NFS, SMB and FTP server. The distribution features a special command line shell called "ovios shell" which strives to simplify system management.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Using it for NFS to provide backend storage to a few ESxi servers. I love it so far.
Very good performance compared to our CentOS servers.

We've been using HA clustering too, the tests ran nicely, haven't yet been in a situation where there is a node failure, but we assume the failover will be fine.

Its excellent storage operating system.. Only thing you need to read the documentation. If you look at the memory usage, its an eye opener.

My practical experience.

I have tried this storage on OS first generation i3 cpu and 2 GB ram with 2 tb * 4 disk [ zraid2 ] and used usb as boot drive. Voila... The memory usage after enabling smb [ 18 users] , thin iscsi with 4 luns, and nfs - 20 shares, the system hardly used 800 mb ram with zfs. This is far far better than freenas or nas4free. Using this system for last 3 weeks, and i can assure you the performance is top notch.

My wish list - if developer can some how, add the web gui, it would be far better.

PS. in Nov 2018 - 2nd week we are going to try a ha cluster consisting 3 nodes.

I really like this small distro, seems to be very powerful with HA cluster and Replication enabled.
I like the way you can configure almost every aspect of the system with the 'options' command

Giving it a 9 because it doesn't have a graphical UI and the devs mentioned they won't build one.

Even so, it's still great.
