Oracle Linux

Last Update: 2019-11-17 07:10 UTC

Oracle Linux is an enterprise-class Linux distribution supported by Oracle and built from source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Some of the special features of Oracle Linux include a custom-build and rigorously-tested Linux kernel called "Oracle Unbreakable Kernel", tight integration with Oracle's hardware and software products including most database applications, and "zero downtime patching" - a feature that enables administrators to update the kernel without a reboot.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

The stability/compatibility of RH, faster updates than CentOS with kernel series 4.x, for free? I'm in :-)

This is my GOTO standard operating system for database servers from any vendor. It's built from Red Hat sources and it's free for non-commercial use. I've used several distros over the years and nothing comes close to being as stable as this. I literally cannot remember a single event when an application crashed. This OS is built for mission critical environments along with it's other offering Solaris.

Oracle Enterprise Linux 7.6 - (OEL)

The Good:

No need for a license/CSI. You access the Oracle yum repos like any other EL. yum update. Like most distros, OEL has it's own repos for updates. They're free. yum.oracle.com.

4.14 Kernel
GUI or cmd line installer options, seem to be fewer options than I remember CenTOS having, but that's not a bad thing necessarily.
Fast. Noticeably faster on my aging Dell than .deb based distros which ran mainly 4.4/4.9 kernels.
Binary compatibility with RH and Centos.
Fast dead-simple installer.
Stable.
Drivers if you need WiFi.

The Less Good:
Well, it's an 'Enterprise Linux' - this brings the following choices made by the Upstream distro (RH):
systemd
SELinux
Firewall-cmd (you can disable this and run gufw instead if that makes you happier)
Gnome3 - Gnome3 isn't bad, but it's also not a 'must have'. 7.6 sports Gnome 3.28, which is pretty current. Since Gnome3 depends on systemd, I run Gnome3 on my EL installs, since they have systemd anyway. Everywhere else is Xfce or LXDE. Sometimes MATE.

Other:
XFS filesystem by default
Like most EL:
-Need to supplement packages with EPEL/RPMFusion/pkgs.org and/or others.
-Some packages can be a bit older even using extra repos. As with CenTOS, avoid the temptation to install Fedora packages. Stick with OEL and EPEL. If you want a bleeding edge EL, run Fedora instead.

No 7.6 isos available - just get a 7.5 iso from the links above and 'yum update' to 7.6.
This will take some time if you're over a slow link.

A good EL distro. If you don't want to wait on CenTOS to update, and don't want to pay for RH, give OEL a shot.
