NuTyX

Last Update: 2019-02-15 12:50 UTC

NuTyX is a French Linux distribution (with multi-language support) built from Linux From Scratch and Beyond Linux From Scratch, with a custom package manager called "cards". The package manager can install individual binary packages, a group of related binary packages (e.g. desktop packages, such as KDE or Xfce), and compile source packages from "ports". The distribution is designed for intermediate and advanced Linux users.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

pros

-it's modular. I found that on Debian trying to remove some packages would cause other important things to be deleted. Not on NuTyX though
- it's quite stable and up to date at the same time
- has most of the packages that most people would need in binary format. other software like chrome or dropbox can be built easily from the sources collection
- it's quite responsive and light on resources
- fixed and rolling release branches
- 32 bit (rolling) and 64 bit (fixed and rolling)
- fully featured ISO (with MATE) or a minimal ISO to build you system
- it's based on Linux from Scratch! refreshing to see that it's not just one more Ubuntu spin off
-the cards package manager is very fast and the command line syntax is obvious and easy to remember
-MATE pre installed, but Xfce, LXDE, Lxqt, KDE and Gnome available for install with just two clicks
-it's old Unix like your grandpa likes it

cons

-not that many packages
-smaller team than more established distros
-i found that some programs wouldn't work, like VLC with my files would crash
-some features are not present (like suspending from the menu in MATE (but can be done with Xfce normally)
-as some of Gnome depends on systemd, the gnome package might not be complete enough for some

All in all, I really think the NuTyX team is doing a splendid job with the distro with keeping stability, adding more packages and staying true to Linux and Unix. I like the fact they refer to it as NuTyX GNU/Linux and not just Linux, and I like the distro's name because I think it suggests Unix like HP-UX and AIX would :)

I have been interested in NuTyX for several years, because it is based on Linux From Scratch. At the same time, I was hesitant to install it. Why? Because it's based on Linux From Scratch. :)

I recently decided to dive in and install it. I wish I had done it long before now! Many distros claim to use the KISS principle; however, NuTyX truly does. From the simplicity of the installation to its package manager, NuTyX delivers the KISS principle in all aspects!

The system is a joy to use. Available in both Fixed and Rolling models, I chose the Rolling version. Though based in France (which is where packages/updates are mirrored from), installation of binary packages and updates are incredibly fast despite the fact that I reside in the US.

Their documentation is very well written and gives step-by-step instructions on every aspect of the system...from installation to building packages from source (if needed). They do have a large number of binary packages available that will serve most users well though.

Many thanks to the developer for giving this system to the world (and for making it systemd-free). I can only imagine all that went into it by using LFS as a base. It's a joy to use, and I wish I had tried this system long before now and encourage those interested to give it a try!

Simple, fast, and pretty complete. The average user would hardly ever find a package missing, and when she/he does there is a way to compile it from upstream.
It is very robust and stable, one can hardly believe this system would freeze or crash. That may be an advantage for a small server too.
Not too many distros deviate from the temptation to use systemd, and this one is one of the best I have seen. An intermidiate user will have it installed and ready to go to work in 15-20'. I had a functional desktop environment and basic tools ready and the size was 2GB of disk space while Ram was a bit over a hundred MB. So old computers (32bit too) this is your alternative to antix.
