Neptune

Last Update: 2018-07-22 09:21 UTC

Neptune is a GNU/Linux distribution for desktops. It is based on Debian's Stable branch, except for a newer kernel, some drivers and newer versions of popular applications, such as LibreOffice. It also ships with the latest version of the KDE desktop. The distribution's main goals are to provide a good-looking general-purpose desktop with pre-configured multimedia playback and to offer an easy-to-use USB installer with a persistence option.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Debian Stretch / Netrunner / Enlightenment 16 based

No load to RAM install option
Both DVD and USB stick installs should retain Live settings when installing onto disk
Muon Package Manager. Synaptics can be installed through Discovery app.
No firewall
ROSA/SuSE style USB Image Writer can wipe/clean troublesome USB sticks

Pros:
Very visually pleasing
Pretty GRUB boot splash screen: gray with red progress bar
Beautiful light blue Faensa-Cupertino icon theme.
Beautiful EXO fonts. Minimum eye fatiquing
Beautiful Neptune Gray or Dark themes.
Faensa-Cupertino icons are a very pleasing shade of blue. If you hate Breeze, Faensa is easy to like.

Cons:
Calamares installer, KDE Partition Manager:
Cannot see already labeled partitions. Cannot label partitions.
One may want to burn a copy of 'Super Grub2 Disk' beforehand, just in case the boot loader gets mundged.
Directing where to save the boot loader doesn't always work: installing it to a wrong partition or not setting boot the flag(s).
Do not install the OS directly to USB, because it will then be necessary to always have the USB stick installed when booting to the hard drive; and without the hard drive connected the USB stick will not boot.

Small blinking squares Plymouth black splash screen is pretty much useless.

Right-click, "open Dolphin file manager as root" has been removed. Cannot boot into root using the login screen. Until the disabled root privs problem is fixed, Neptune KDE is probably best suited for novices. Installing krusader, nemo or thunar breaks the visual continuity. A real "deal breaker." One may want to consider other KDE distros that aren't crippled, or consider moving to other DEs, like MATE/Cinnamon or XCFE.

There is no basic firewall installed. Install firewalld, -applet, -config through Synaptic. gufw won't install.

This distro needs to be better known. The live version is somewhat less buggy than the live Debian on which it is based. I've been running this for a few days now, without significant issues and I like it. Would be a good candidate to replace my Linux Mint kde which is stopping. The download was very very slow - slowest I have found.
