DistroWatch.com: Minimal Linux Live

Minimal Linux Live

Last Update: 2019-05-07 12:17 UTC

Minimal Linux Live is a tiny Linux distribution which is designed to be built from scratch using a collection of automated shell scripts. Minimal Linux Live offers a core environment with just the Linux kernel, GNU C library and Busybox userland utilities. This default build is just 7MB in size. Additional software can be included in the ISO image at build time using a well documented configuration file. Minimal Linux Live can be downloaded as a pre-built image, built from scratch or run in a web browser using a JavaScript emulator.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

MLL offers a pleasant experience for learning how to build the Linux OS from scratch and about Linux OS as a whole. It has a great narrative on the inner workings of Linux complemented by an easy-to-follow flow of flawless scripts. As a beginner, one is often tempted to just running the scripts and waiting for a working system and move on without learning much. But MLL has it differently: whether the scripts work or not, one is tempted by the author's text/narative to tinker and dig deeper - to the Dao through doing and experimentation!

MLL is THE Linux at its core: community learning at its best!

About the cons, this user finds some lack of system (host)-specific information, especially possible compilation errors that might be encountered for building the MLL package from source...

every kernel config change I made worked both in QEMU as well as bare metal via BIOS and UEFI.

no quirks or problems.

but the completed ISO does not contain much of course, even the python bundle misses some libraries. Still most amazing.

My netrunner modified kernels gave me far more trouble.

Now someone needs to adapt the GUI lib explored by the puppyLinux guy Mr Kauler so it works in MLL too.

Also the Ivan guy who made MLL should enable the wiki in github so people can share cool kernel .config files or little scripts.

Simply enough to run and have a wonderful documentation support. Very rookie-friendly for those who want to learn how to build a Linux system from scratch.
