Maui Linux

Last Update: 2019-12-03 23:52 UTC

Maui Linux is a desktop Linux distribution based on KDE neon and featuring KDE's Plasma desktop. It was created in August 2016 as a continuation of Netrunner's Kubuntu-based "Desktop" edition, but it was re-based on KDE neon which is a more cutting-edge project with frequent updates and a semi-rolling release model. Besides providing a KDE-centric distribution with many popular KDE packages included on the live DVD, the project also focuses on integrating non-KDE software, such as Firefox, Thunderbird or VLC with the underlying infrastructure of the Plasma desktop.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have tried most linux distros and I still come back to Maui. By far the best.

I graduated through the Kubantu and Netrunner.

I tried many other Linux distros.

I really like this distro because it has the Calamares installer customized for use with Maui. The full list of available menus can be viewed and downloaded individually as widgets by requesting more widgets, then at the bottom of the two column list which appears at thleft is a button to download more widgets. I did like the full-screen Dashboard, and found when I scrolled down the middle dialog box a list of more menus and widgetswith a download button to install for each widget
as well as a link for more information. As a multibooter I am holding this on an install USB for my next replacement Distro.Other menus I liked were "Simple Menu," "Excalibur,""Application Menu,"( similar to Netrunner's kicker menu, and several Windows-like options (7 and 10), but those latter two would not work
after I downloaded them. I am also curious about one called "Global Menu."
There is some fun lurking in this Distro. It's good looks are just a bonus. Synaptic is pre-installed, as is Discover, a Software-Center-like application. I added Muon Package Manager for its convenience as an Updater in my Live running system.
I will definitely have Maui in my array of options in Grub. This is one of those Distros that keeps me focused on using Linux for the long term. Netrunner in the fixed release mode is similarly a gem needing further exploration to be fully appreciated. It also comes in the Plasma 5 desktop enironment. Does this say something great about Plasma 5?

It's really very well implemented distro as a Live, and as installed as well. Installed on a dsktp of AMD FX 16GB, and nVidia 9600. Huge potential and maybe brite future, but without KDE. or at least with MATE,LXDE and XFCE flavours also. KDE even in the latest version slows down the sys straight after the personalisation.Three days later, the HDD suffers trying to cope with who knows what KDE needs. Using another AMD four cores "older than FX" 8 GB memory and the same HDD, Sygate 1TB with Voyager Xubuntu and exaclty the same personalisation, works "much smoother". Someone should try Maui on FDD system, probably then KDE could show how "good" could be. Maui could cause few hikups during installation or during the first start up on UEFI MBs, better switch it off and after that configure the MB,
