Hyperbola GNU/Linux-libre

Last Update: 2019-09-24 01:10 UTC

The Hyperbola Project is a community driven effort to provide a fully free (as in freedom) operating system that is stable, secure, simple, lightweight that tries to Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS) with Long Term Support (LTS). Derived from Arch snapshots, plus stability and security from Debian, Hyperbola provides packages that meet the GNU Free System Distribution Guidelines (GNU FSDG) and offers replacements for the packages that do not meet this requirement. Packages are provided for the i686 and x86_64 architectures.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Amazing distro
Will let me install everything free and libre
and use wine to install old windows games that r non-free (unless it's offline i am fine with that)... I don't need to dual boot because of this...

Really nice thanks :)

The last time I reviewed this, I was glad I decided to use this distro I was glad, but it keeps getting better!
OpenSSL has been ripped out in favor of LibreSSL due to OpenSSL's security issues and being bloated.
Xorg has been replaced with Xenocara for similiar reasons.

LibreSSL, Xenocara are made by OpenBSD for those who don't know, same as Sndio.

And yes, Hyperbola has plans to use sndio as the default sound system instead of that bloated pulseaudio.

If you want to avoid anything poettering and have a lightweight, secure system but with a K.I.S.S approach, Aka, keeping it simple stupid xD. This is the distro for you.

This distro is also fully free software and heavily security focused.

Caution though, if you want an easy to install distro that has non-free software such as chromium, or webextensions firefox, then this distro is not for you.

Also, NetworkManager will be removed in the future in favor of dhcpcd-ui as the wifi interface.

Both are currently within the repository but NetworkManager as many know is bloated and a poettering toy.

If anyone has read this far and still wants to use it or has something to say, please use it first before making a review and be detailed as to why you like or dislike it.

Again, my distro hopping is done with thanks to this distro. :)
