GeckoLinux

Last Update: 2019-04-11 06:22 UTC

GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The distribution features many desktop editions which can be installed from live discs. Some patent encumbered open source software is included in GeckoLinux which is not available in the default installation of openSUSE. Special attention has been given to the quality of the font rendering. GeckoLinux provides two main editions, Static (which is based on openSUSE Leap) and Rolling (based on openSUSE Tumbleweed).

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I have used openSUSE on and off for years. I am SUSE certified too.... YET...
Always broken. This version, too. I used to work for an OEM and used to deal with SUSE installers all the time as mostly things like sound would not work etc. People say it has MINOR issues, and I agree. SUSE/ Gecko needs a papercuts update.
little things....

1. brand new install the dual boot with windows 7 was not there, OK, I can fix that!
(have you read SUSE documentation?) After 2 hours I could not fix it.
I found Arch and other documentation and fixed it.(I come from grub days not Grub2)
2. brand new install did and update - now systemd-networkd is missing? OK I can fix that!
(man nmcli - bash: man: command not found - what the actual f?......)
3. Whisker menu icon missing after update - huh? Really? Can't you keep your needed stuff in one place?
4. Install git - oh million messages how it is going to break OpenSUSE? ... smh

UGH. I am not young any more and its nice when things 'just work'.
I cannot recommend that you use it as a daily driver UNLESS you are willing to faff for hours.

Great Distro!

I've used OpenSuse for years and in general like it's features. This removes a lot of the bloat and is a great presentation. As others have mentioned the installer has a few minor issues, but were easily overcome without a great deal of trouble. I'm running the static version with KDE and XFCE. I normally use the XFCE desktop since it offers some of the virtual desktop features that Plasma did away with when they went to activities.

I'm not young anymore and really appreciate a disro that just works and does what it's supposed to do without creating a lot of headaches.

I highly recommend this distro.

Thanks and keep up the good work.

This is OpenSuse done right!

I absolutely love this distro. It's the only thing that has moved me from Kubuntu in 5 years.
Highly recommend. Didn't get a 10/10 because there is still a little polish needed, particularly for the installer. All up though, I'll be running Static (Leap) on my system critical stuff, and Rolling (Tumbleweed) for my laptop, dev machine and general playing.

Hassle free and beautiful distro.
