Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

I've been using elementaryOS on a wide variety of hardware since v0.3 "freya", and I've loved my time with it. I love the look and feel of the OS, the way everything conforms to a single style, and even "alien" Linux apps are made to feel more at home. I like the *idea* of the paid apps, but cannot agree to the only *current* method of payment. I'm keen to see something worked out which would act as a buffer between payment and my bank. (ideally, something like gift cards that you can pay cash for locally and redeem on-line...[GooglePay, and Apples equivalent *may not* be averse to this] But just something like PayPal would do)

Windows users hate the alloy window theme and Plank, which remind them of Mac, (you *can* replace the theme, and uninstall plank, but not easily, and I don't know why you'd want to, since you'd probably want to find an alternative "task bar" for switching between active applications) Mac users hate using the LaunchPad from WingPanel because it feels like a Start menu, and they both hate the fact that you can't litter your desktop with documents, or even have a Trash/Recycle bin on it. All of which is easily overcome once you step out of your pre-defined idea of what a computer desktop *should* be, and realise that all of this makes your life simpler, and cleaner.

My love has gone down in the last month, as a number of my elementaryOS systems, some still running Loki, and others running Juno, have developed bugs which have made them unusable.

I can only presume this is some upstream update (or, possibly, more than one) which has made them unstable, and in different ways on different hardware. I'm increasingly thinking that Ubuntu may not be a sufficiently *solid* upstream base for such a unique desktop OS. I'd like to recommend free/netBSD, but in all honesty, just the stable branch of Debian proper may give better results. ;) (would certainly be easier to port to)

Disappointing. For me it was like the clone of a MacOS clone. If Windows would be a silk tie and Linux one of polyester. Then elementaryOS would undoubtedly be a paper tie with swarovski crystals made of plastic. 3 points out of 10 because of the good people, who work for it.
