Debian

Last Update: 2018-01-16 06:20 UTC

The Debian Project is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system is called Debian. Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel. Linux is a completely free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide. Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software. Debian comes with over 50,000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) - all of it free. It's a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools. Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian -- carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Pros: stable, fast and light(Xfce was using just 300 MB RAM)
Cons: you have to install with a wired connection because Wifi is non-free firmware in most cases

Debian user since v5.0 I have nothing but compliments to express to the team. I tried it on several laptops and desktops and always found my hardware up and running at first boot.
Indeed, some drivers needs more tweaking but if you are really into IT it is one more interesting step to follow from them wiki.
Turning it into a server is also as easy as 1,2, 3. The updating and upgrading process works like a charm. You can even have choice between apt-get or aptitude or even dpkg.
So pros are: continuity, stability, "fit in small computers"
And cons are: the install process is sometimes a bit tricky. i.e I had a bad hard drive where I could not create a file system and the system kept on asking me if I wanted to abort. Which I did but it get stuck into a loop. Thanks.

Advantages:

- stability of course, it's more stable than most of stable editions of other systems

- polished, every kernel update goes smoothly, all drivers work

- it's not a dead version like stable and not too modern like SID,
that's why it's good because it's between, its a moderate distro

- it's a system very rich in software - every desktop, many architectures, many destinations, etc.
It's really created for all purposes. I admit it requires studying and time, a normal man doesn't have much
free time but it's worth it.

- I don't know why but under testing I have no problems
with internal and external wireless cards in comparison with a stable branch

- really efficient, it consumes little resources, obviously I use netinstall version but Debian always was
a lightweight distro and keeps this trend

Disadvantages:

- you need a cable connection to install it

- a little bit difficult for a normal home user

- proprietary software should me made more accessible, because, for example,
Broadcom WiFi driver installation is a challenge under Debian

Some personal remark:

It's better to update to a testing from a stable branch, you will have less bugs/problems if any.

Anyway, I give 10 because I see significant improvement in comparison with previous testing, really.
May be I'm wrong, but I really think that all things work better in Buster than in previous testings, especially
is easier to establish WiFi connection.
