Clear Linux

Last Update: 2019-05-15 00:39 UTC

Clear Linux is a minimal distribution primarily designed with performance and cloud use-cases in mind. The operating system upgrades as a whole rather than using individual packages. Extra software can be added to the system (along with associated dependencies) using pre-compiled bundles which can be accessed through the distribution's swupd software manager.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Surprisingly fast, and an absolute joy to use. The software manager "swupd" is snappy and I love that it's a rolling release. I'll be following this distro very closely!

It's fast, but then it should be as a multi-Billion Dollar company is behind it.

You can argue all day long on the boards about telemetry, but it seems to be very similar to Cannonicals, with the option to not participate.

This could be the defacto Linux distro in a few years time.

Check your processor is compatible beforehand, it must have AES (AES-NI) capability, most i-3 chips don't.

I recently have removed Win10 on my HP Spectre 360 15t laptop with 4K display and installed Clear. So far so good. Good progress from what it was before just couple months ago:
1) Installation from the live iso - convenient, with intuitive flow
2) Stable networking, finally

Strong Pros:
1) High performance - it is expected
2) Rolling release mode with stateless concept
3) Surprisingly good support of my HDPI screen:
a) Gnome scales almost everything easily, couple single Qt adjustments - and it works beautifully, while other DE (KDE, Xfce, LxQt) required much more tuning for HDPI
b) Touch on my screen is supported well
4) Software GUI looks like similar package managers from other distros with large set of bundles, while more comprehensive command line tool swupd is also available

Weak Cons:
1) Manual installation of some essential packages (e.g. ffmpeg). In the same time compiling from source runs reliably (due to modern packages), and even for other distro (e.g. Fedora) I also used compiling from source for some custom packages.
2) My HP wireless printer was settled up easy and fast and seamlessly printing, but scanning is not available in open source tools, while no problems in commercial tools

I would rated it as 9.5, but rounded that to 10, mostly due to the fast progress and hoping it will be even better in a near future
