Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view:
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "kdelibs" and "plasma-desktop" packages and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Use this with my dual boot of Solus. My main problem with Arch is that for every slightly newer version of a package than on other rolling release distros you'll encounter about 3 more bugs. I just don't see all the hassle worth it.

I use this mainly to test packages that have major updates to them and want to test them out before upgrading them on Solus, and for that it works flawlessly!

I also don't like the direction Arch is going. More and more stuff is being added to it that isn't needed. It's supposed to be a tinkering distro, not "Rolling release Ubuntu".

Overall, Arch at its core is a good distro. I don't recommend users using it as their daily OS though. There's simply much better options out there. (Artix, Solus, Slackware, ect.)

Great linux distro.

Some experience from the user is recommended. System needs configuration after the installation. I had to edit the X.org file for the nvidia drivers to be correctly loaded, had to switch the Bluetooth mode from HID to HCI, and use full gdm (gnome display manager) instead of lightdm for suspend and hibernate to work properly.
However there exists enhanced documentation for issues like that on the ArchWiki pages.

pros : lightweight, rolling release, very stable. Fall-back works very well.
cons: Not all kernel upgrades work.
