Alpine Linux

Last Update: 2019-11-10 23:59 UTC

Alpine Linux is a community developed operating system designed for routers, firewalls, VPNs, VoIP boxes and servers. It was designed with security in mind; it has proactive security features like PaX and SSP that prevent security holes in the software to be exploited. The C library used is musl and the base tools are all in BusyBox. Those are normally found in embedded systems and are smaller than the tools found in GNU/Linux systems.

Table Notes and Explanations

(Please refer to the table below.)
  • Select view: Major packages only (52) All tracked packages (226)
  • To compare the software in this project to the software available in other distributions, please see our Compare Packages page.
  • Notes: In case where multiple versions of a package are shipped with a distribution, only the default version appears in the table. For indication about the GNOME version, please check the "nautilus" and "gnome-shell" packages. The Apache web server is listed as "httpd" and the Linux kernel is listed as "linux". The KDE desktop is represented by the "plasma-desktop" package and the Xfce desktop by the "xfdesktop" package.
  • Colour scheme: green text = latest stable version, red text = development or beta version. The function determining beta versions is not 100% reliable due to a wide variety of versioning schemes.

Complex install for new user. More specific documentation (with examples) would be really helpful to get it installed.

Alpine works wonderfully. The apk package manager is a dream. Much faster and better than apt (convoluted and, you're never sure what it will do) or portage (emerge is full of ridiculous options and is slow, god knows how to configure genup, and eix is not much help, but, at least I can throw away a lot of all of Xfce4 anything systemd on Gentoo, after reading countless warning messages). Now, if Alpine could just provide a bootable aarch 64 system for Raspberry Pi 3 or Asus Tinkerboard S, I'd be in heaven. Fair disclosure: I don't care much for OOP it just gets messier and messier. I've been programming, using, administering and fixing other people's problems, as much as possible with UNIX like systems, for 40 years. I like just about anything, Gnu. I honestly believe, Intel, Microsoft, RedHat and freedesktop.org are stealing your money, other people's code and make messes they never intend to clean up. Life is a lot easier when people read the documentation learn the simplest languages and just use the oldest tools available.

This is a neat minimal distro, aimed at professionals who know their way around a Unix system and are not afraid of tinkering with its internals. It is also quite good as an environment to learn Unix administration, and perfect as a starting point for chroots, containers, and custom systems. I think this is one of the few remaining distros around whose smallest installation is below 10MB.

There is a large selection of packages available, but be sure that you understand that some third party applications might need to be rebuilt and/or might not work at all under musl. In general, everything is smooth, especially if you are prepared to look at the code, if the need arises.

Alpine makes very few choices on your behalf, and lets you customise almost any aspect of your system. So if you think Linux is a Luna Park where everything should work straight out-of-the-box without any manual intervention, or if you are a compulsive distro-hopper looking for yet-another pre-baked shiny desktop environment with a lot of rainbow glitter and no personality, then get off the train now: Alpine is just not for you.
