Acer Aspire 5100, AMD Turion 64 Mobile MK-36 2000 MHz, 768 MB RAM, Mobility Radeon Xpress 200, Realtek Fast Ethernet Adapter_Broadcom Limited Wifi, Western Digital 80 GB.
First time I'm installing AcademiX GNU/Linux on a laptop. Although, as it is, everything runs decently. It seems it's missing something for the wireless network, I need to search for it and also RAM upgrade and everything would be much better. A turning point for me to switch to MATE, simpler than GNOME and not gourmand as resources.
EDU and Package Updater are also better GUI apps for beginners and school environment. Not to mention all other installed by default for them to start out of the gate.
The developer could consider in the future for a lightweight version by reducing a bunch of unneeded packages. That's for experts as default OS for daily work.

Hi, I installed AcademiX GNU / Linux in dual boot with WIndows 10 on a Dell Latitude 5490 laptop, I have to say that your OS was created quite well, EDU software manager well done with all its categories. The only thing I don't like and start menu, I personally prefer the old Mate menu ... all in all, congratulations for the effort , keep it up !!

Here is my desktop configuration with Academix 2.3 installed:
ECS GeForce7050M-M v: 1.0 / AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ / NVIDIA MCP67 Ethernet / Samsung 250 GB HDD/ 1.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM. Would be great more RAM.
Passing the time test, the old MATE not glittering as other Desktop Environments but most interesting very stable, functional in options and still customizable from repo and mate-look.org. Good choice!
There was the time for fast, stable and lightweight educational distribution for education, a very smart idea EDU implemented.

My recommendation to replace win 10 which has driven me crazy over past months.
I tried several Linux flavours, AcademiX and the system it is based on Debian AcademiX just works, no failed installations, good hardware recognition, codecs download a one click solution. Host list ad blocking also only a mouse click away, nice touch.
Why no choice, stable, or fresh for those who need the maximum compatibility to MS product line as in current usage case.

I have used it as primary on my home/work laptop for two years now. Very slick and fast on old laptops, notably faster than Windows, Mint, other Linux distributions--only Puppy linux is faster, and Puppy requires a lot more hand-holding. I've given AcademiX away as a gift on used laptops to Linux-naive relatives, and installed it on an elderly parent's laptop as an alternative to Windows, with very happy customers in all cases.Very smart selection of software

Installed on an old computer equipped with Intel T 5800. We have changed menus and icons to reduce consumption. The result was a memory consumption of approximately 350 MB (4 GB RAM). It moves fast and efficiently for old hardware. In live it moves a little harder, however iso is equipped with many drivers for wifi and printers. Stable as Debian Buster

AcademiX 2.3 is working okay on my computer, I don't see any problems. I don't need the extra drivers on my desktop computer, my onboard Ethernet is always configured correctly. But I know I will need the non-free firmware on my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop, for the Broadcom WiFi.
The desktop computer is nothing special, just an old machine I built myself from various parts. Has an Antec case holding an Intel Xeon X3450 processor installed on a SuperMicro X8SIA motherboard, 32 GB ECC DDR3 RAM, nVidia 9600 GT PCI-E video card, Sound Blaster PCI card, and a KINGSTON 240 GB SSD drive. I tested XFCE instead of Mate, it moves just as fast. Instead Cinnamon moves harder on Academix. The computer I tested has an i7 of the first generations with 4gb ram. It is important that there is a desire to introduce Linux in the education of young people. Maybe developers are also thinking of a version with XFCE preinstalled

Install dual boot Academix and Windows, i5 processor and 8 gb ram. I updated the system, it sees the partitions of Windows, everything without problems. I still have to get used to the education programs. Mate seems to me much faster even if it is poorer. Previously I had kde installed but at one point I had problems with resource consumption. I think it is better with a simpler graphical interface. The system is moving well, a suggestion for the developer would be in the mathematical section the Asymptope program

Interesting you can install on education categories package by package. Anyone can easily install them with just one click, both the teacher and the student. I see this distribution as a good help for both students and students. Reliability and stability Debian combined with a very generous education repository + a simple interface can only be a success. Initially I installed in the virtualbox, I saw how it works and I installed on a dual core 4 GB dual boot boot with Windows.
Installation without problems

AcademiX has installed without difficulty on a variety of machines from old to new. Yes on some I did have to change BIOS settings but that is to me normal pre install setup to move from Win 10 to a sane OS. Hardware recognition is excellent. With mother Debian behind all the software in their repos available, that is more than I will ever even dream of.
Install non free drivers at a button click, move the dock to bottom of screen, populate it with office, browser and mail shortcuts and just get on with work.
I see no reason not to recommend this distro to both young and old, it is along with Mint 17.3 my best Linux experience in around 15 years.
Use a good blocklist in /etc/hosts and you will be mostly ad free as well as reduce your internet footprint, without all the background crap see how fast the internet can be :-)
Would be wonderful to install with these issues adressed, a non chatty firefox fork, Claws Mail as standard, it trounces thunderbird once you understand how it works and does one job well.i.e. no browser inbuilt, no telemetry or other nasty functions. A Tor browser install button would be a nice addition. I put TOR in home, there it updates automatically when you start it.
AcademiX gets my vote and my donations Massive YES and many thanks to the devs.

I have installed AcademiX on various older computers, from 1-2-4-8-12GB RAM, Radeon/NVidia graphics cards, network cable.
Pros
Installation was easy, fast and smooth.
Lightweight distribution is probably due to a small ISO and applications in categories that are not pre-installed, as in other distributions for education, and which can be installed with one click.
I am glad to see applications for science too. E.g. Medicine and Engineering.
Cons
Currently, no; except the menu in the panel: I use Main Menu, removed Advanced Menu (looks like Brisc Menu, somehow buggy).
I'd like the "Reset to default" option in some settings, e.g. background.

As always it is very stable (running on my Lenovo T420 laptop).
Its supports newer packages compared to older releases that we're lagging a bit more behind.
I would definitely recommend AcademiX for work or home.

Dual boot AcademiX-Windows Vista
I installed AcademiX in dual boot with Windows Vista. Everything is going perfectly, unfortunately Vista is going so hard. Easy installation in dual boot.
Boot time pretty good considering how old the laptop is.
I use this calculator for genetics and biology. VGLII is truly a virtual laboratory for genetics.
Another interesting program for biology is Biogenesis.
The Icy developed by the Pasteur Institute is truly impressive being of real use in biology.
The virtual microscope brings an extra in biology through the impressive amount of high resolution images.
With Seaview I solve many common problems.
StarORF developed by MIT solves many protein problems
I had no problems with this distribution even though the laptop I installed is antique.
I think that AcademiX by the large number of programs structured by categories adds to education and Linux in general.
As a Windows user I was pleasantly impressed by how this distribution works.and Linux in general.

Device-2: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter driver: ath10k_pci
Ram 8 gb
The system behaves well, stability and speed very good.
Worth noting V-Rep-Player and V-Rep-PRO-Edu in the Robotics category, easy to install and very versatile.
In the Engineering category there are many packages that can be used by engineers and students
In the Physics category we find Energy2d, Energy3d and Openmeca very useful for both students and engineers.
In the very useful Virtual Laboratory category is Virtual Brain, PhET successfully completes lessons in physics, biology, mathematics.
On the whole there are no problems

kernel 4.19.0-5-amd64
Nvidia GPUs,
Intel CPUs on desktop & laptop
It is my new favorite linux distro! I have used straight Debian as well as Ubuntu & Linuxmint. This one runs smoother & more trouble free than the others by a long shot. I am still rocking 10+ yr old hardware (Dell core duo laptop as well as older desktop tower) with no issues. ( low ram use is a key part of it)
You can't go wrong with Academix desktop.
Lots of browser options as well as every package you could possibly want or need to do what you previously ran on Windows OS. If there is something missing the great developers & maintainers are very accommodating to locate what you may be missing. They just added a whole section in Package download area for VPNs & other networking concerns. A big part of the computer experience is user support & their forum & FB group check that box in spades.
For all those Microsoft Windows refugees, this may be your safe haven. Easy transition to a new Linux OS. For all those long term Linux users, give this distro a try! Developers & maintenance team are quick responders when any issues come up.
Linux is all about choices - freedom of your data & customized experience.

Installed on multiple PC`s at home. While the installer had some problems at identifying one of my network cards , i think that is because of the proprietary realtek driver of that specific PCI-e card. However after install it saw the network and worked out of the box. It offers a pleasant experience even on older hardware.
I hope to see it on more places from now on since it`s originally an edu-oriented distro.

Nice tidy operating system that installs on most hardware with very few problems. Have installed on a large number of "older" machines with no problems except for the occasional problem with wifi cards/chips. In these instances the unusual hardware has also thwarted other linux os. Very stable with lots of eye candy and utilities as standard.
Not heavy on resource, so suitable for older hardware, quite fast on newer machines
Most software for home/business use is already up and ready to go

Installing AcademiX on my T430 ThinkPad Notebook.
Everything goes well. The installer is the default installer from Debian and it is an good point.
As official Debian Buster release dont have non-free drivers as well neither AcademiX on installation point. Just Hit Continue to go on finish.
On first reboot I've seen that the Wi-Fi drivers is working without problems.
I can see that also on Live Booting AcademiX it works everything from scratch.
If installation is without network ( installer does not recognize the network adapters ) then just go un Softfare & Update Center ( not EDU because you dont have the repository source enabled ) and check every checkbox on first tab. Refresh or reboot and all the software will now apear on the EDU list.
All gone very well on my opinion.
Nothing to say about Cons.

I use this version of AcademiX on a laptop with i3 and 8GiB RAM. The problem I encountered was that the installation did not recognize the drivers of the WiFi module. After installation he recognized me and I could use it on the network.
In EDU I have only a few programs out of the 150 (as written on their site).
When they solve the problem with WiFi, I will give them a higher rating rating.

Hi people, I just tried to install AcademiX on an Acer computer from scrap and it worked. A little slower considering its configuration, a P4 2.93 GHz, 1GB SDDR RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.
Pros
Works on older computer.
With a memory upgrade to 2 GB RAM it will be fine and AcademiX becoming a challange for other lighweight Linux distribution.
Cons
In fact its not a cons, nvidia driver (304.xx) for my graphic card being available from now only in Debian_stretch but don't matter I can work on this computer.

I installed AcademiX on my hard disk and I highly recommend everyone to use it as your desktop OS.
User-friendly distro- yes, it is a user-friendly distro. I have tried Debian based distros like- ubuntu, sparky, MX linux etc.
Lightweight- I would say here that AcademiX is the most lightweight linux distro of others. All tests were run on a 32bit-processor and 1GB RAM computer. All three distros were updated and fresh installed.
Stable- AcademiX is the most stable distro among all. After getting a horrible update on my previous lubuntu OS, my icons were disappeared and themes got a cross icon sign. It has been for 2 months I'm using AcademiX but it doesn't has any bug so far.

I gave it a chance on my computer with Quad Core Intel Core i7 920 2661 MHz, 12GB RAM, GeForce GT 740, network cable.
I burned out the ISO with Etcher, I recomand this good software, so then I installed graphically very easy and fast.
I like MATE that is good for resources consumption.
what about edu? the point is that the names apparently encrypted from synaptic are enrolled in sections that are easier to find at the teaching level so at least you know whose purpose it is.
In Menu I found also documentation that can be improved and organized in a better way.
I found AcademiX a great release for education and I kindly recommend in schools.
No Cons at this time.

There are so many positive things to say about AcademiX that I do not have enough room to do so. Instead, I'll sum everything up with simply one word - "EXCELLENT."
A big hearty Thank You to all the developers responsible for this fine Distro which is the utmost best Windows replacement. The developers at AcademiX did not just settle for an Operating System that would work up to Windows 10 specifications, instead they made a much better Operating System than Windows 10 could ever be. When I previously used Windows 10 on this computer I would have to add-on a lot of aftermarket programs to do what AcademiX 2.2 does straight out of the box without any add-ons. After using AcademiX 1 for awhile, why would I or anybody else want to use the sub-standard Windows 10? I state this from the perspective of someone who works on(including building) computers for myself, my family and others AND I've done development work for Microsoft. Just to be able to work on other people's computers, I keep several computers with different versions of Windows on them. This is to keep me up to date with other people's computers I work on. Now that I have totally switched to AcademiX on my personal computer, I realized now more than ever exactly how poor the Windows Operating System truly is. Let's hope with Microsoft's renewed interest in Linux, they will not do to Linux what they did to Windows.

I have tried AcademiX GNU/Linux on an Asus desktop.
With a relatively small ISO, for which distribution is wanted, the installation went easy and fast as well as starting. Shutting down (sleep, hibernate, shutdown) is within 2 seconds.
I did not have any trouble in this configuration:
- Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3000 MHz Dual Core;
- Storage: Western Digital 80 GB hard drive;
- Memory: 4GB DDR II RAM;
- Display: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD / ATI] RV630 XT [Radeon HD 2600 XT] video card;
- Network: NVIDIAMCP61 card.
I like EDU Software Manager because you can easily choose to install the desired application with one-click from an educational category.
Therefore, compared to Synaptic, I think EDU is useful for beginners and more intuitive for students and teachers.
I also found a some GUIs for beginners such as Software & Updates, Additional Drivers, Packages, Package Updater, Hardware Lister.

Old dualcore, 4gb ram, 500 gb hdd, Fujitsu Siemens v6535, Kernel 4.19, Openbox, Ceni, Nodm, Office and Multimedia full stuff - 15 seconds boot to graphic environment with Virtualbox and Teamviewer services included.
Current testing is very fast and stable even with systemd after masking some unnecessary services.

As a user, you need to configure lots of things if compared to another popular linux-based distros. This is also a good thing in my opinion because you will learn more about how the actual system works and you will have less unnecessary piece of software on your machine, using less memory and also running faster with a very stable system. Here some tips:
I do recommend you adding "contrib non-free" as arguments on the actual repos and then install firmware-linux. While installing, if there's a missing firmware, install it, for example I needed to install firmware-realtek on my laptop.
If you have a laptop, please install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics if you want a better touchpad integration, install thermald for better fan and power control (yeah, this is the solution for the guy above who is reporting problems about the fan), install xserver-xorg-input-mtrack if you have touchscreen and install tlp for better power management. please dont forget to enable and start thermald (using systemctl).
Some packages are very old and I guess you should use flatpak or snap for installing newer versions of application packages you may need, just for not affecting the stability of the system.
Hope that's helpful for all you guys.

Tested the EDU software center and found that it has a lot of educational software that other distributions dont have.
This is a good point because if you think to an software, let's say , DICOM viewer, just type on the searchbox of software center and you will find what you want.
Easy to install, easy to configure.
I use the AcademiX on an chemical research project and also on everyday computer.
No problems at all so far!

Also SAMBA 4 work very well and managed to create Active Directory from few click's of mouse.
I am very satisfied.
PRO's - an very tiny ISO wich shorted the installation time.
EDU - software manager works very, very well and easily find what you searc. Inside the EDU packahe ,manger you have also in web browser. You can click on the link from description and voila. All the source project page.
Con's - no con's right now.

Used Server side on some teaching software.
Installation worked smooth and software instalation on terminal or EDU software manager was very quick.
Everything works great from installation to exploatation/working with it.
Uptime is almost one week without chrash or problems.
Monitored the activity on the server side, and good implementation of security.
Pros- Everything from install to working with it goes smooth
Cons- A newer kernel ( 4.22 ) will be grate but waiting for developers to solve it.
An very fast working interface. MATE is always a good choice for everyone. From beginners to advanced users.

Amazing educational distribution, it worked on many desktop computers or laptops from my Live USB! Using a good USB drive with fast read speeds for the best performance, on a USB 3.0 port. It also works on USB 2.0 with older computers. So, you can try AcademiX before installing on your hardware! Also, it is available for testing in a browser from DistroTest.net so you can see why so many users actually choose to give the maximum rating.

Distribution is fast at installation and also on operation.
Some problems regarding some Accessibility and Power management must be resolved.
The software from Repository And from Software Center works very well.
Also updates are checked daily and if new packages are found the updates cand be applied or not.
Installed on HP ProtectSmart , Model 15-p078sa.
Worked very well.
As other reviwers told and after viewing the instalation video from their site some peripherials are not detected by the installer but after installation everything works smooth.
Also maybe a new kernel 4.22 ( aka 5.15) can be set optional at the updates for testing.
Anyway, Educational software is very well organized by age categories and specialty.
Tested some Robotics software and at summer school students understand how some robots work.
Just my houghts!

An useful offline guide
Fast and responsive also as live on a low spec pc (Asus eeePC)
All the hardware work out of the box
Cons: No one at the moment

I have installed it on my Intel NUC desktop. I use 8gb ram, 128 gb M.2 ssd for my operating system and home files and one 120gb ssd for extra storage. It runs very well. 30sec bootup. Programs run fast and well out of the box. AcademiX detected all of the connections including wifi. No problems with setup.
I was very impressed with AcademiX so I put it on my Dell 13" laptop. It has 8gb ram, 240 gb ssd and again it ran well out of the box.
Additional programs are easy to add or with the EDU programs manager or the Synaptic package manager. These programs can easily be added or removed very quickly.
My conclusion... this AcademiX is the best distro I have seen thus far.

No support for virtualbox guest provided by default (guest addition or stagging driver) making it unpleasant for quick try.
Lack of documentation.
Overall seems to be just a pimped Debian ISO.
The package manager appears to be stolen from Linux Mint (at least the authors could leave the original credit, not override it)
No access to the custom repository for package review.
Licensing is unclear.

The latest review was made by somebody from another distribution that he knows who it is.
Some Gentoo derivated distribution. I understand that.
Licensing in my opinion is very clear and GPL compliant also MIT compliant. As far as I found it on the site they made public the tree-repository.
Also the source code is public and yes they have in description that the Software Center is inspired from mintinstall.
Also, much more distribution dont have the Guest Add-ition of VirtualBox on the ISO. Is not the point. You can install it by yourself.
First time I have tested On an Lenovo ThinkPad T430 notebook with VirtualBox and installed very well guest addition, installed very easy inside the Vitual machine by running the .run package that installs the aditions. It is an Optional and not mandatory thing.
For quick try everyone has Live version of the distribution.

Installation worked very well on this notebook. Recognized even the Wi-fi and Ethernet.
Some little problems with Battery indicator and with touchpad but solved .
After install Touchpad and all hardware worker very well.
Installed Nvidia Geforce 940Mh Optimus option. Works very well!
As everybody knows from Official Debian Buster DVD release some problems with wi-fi drivers.
Overall it was ok!
No power management utilities present and must be solved!

Overall it is ok but still needs some improvements.
Documentation it is incomplete.
Must work on installer drivers. Because of Debian Official installer does not have some other drivers and some hardware during installation is nor recognized.
As responsivnes, it is ok.
The Mate Desktop Environment it is fast and also they have an script that must be automated.
After first boot apears on Grub The Debian entry.
To resolve this must autorun script tune-academix post install.
Rigt now, to run tune-academix must be logged as root.
Does not work as su
It will be very nice an 5.xx kernel version.
It is run smooth on old systems that suports x64 operating systems and it runs even on 2GB RAM.
The Educational Application as Teacher are very good. I have tested few applications and they ork very well.
It is place for better and I hope that developement team will make improvements.

Easy to install distribution.
Easy to install software because of software package manager.
Small ISO ( 1.6GB am very speedy install and running.
On some sistems at instalation did not recognized the wi-fi and / or ethernet adapters.
I repeat, only on installation. Just click continue and on normal sistem everything works like a charm.
Reported to maintaining team and told that they will insert some drivers compliant with Free Software just like Debian Unofficial ISO's.
Anyway, it work very well.
PS: After installation just go on Software and Updates and under Debian Software select everything and the mirror that you want to use. That's it. All good now.
Updates are checked daily. From Update manager can you set the period of updates checking.
Very good organized Educational software categories.

Distribution for education with low resource consumption, very well organized repository.
Programs such as Phet or Virtual Microscope are true virtual labs.
A very good idea, software manager organized by education from medicine to engineering, from electronics to energy, from math to genetics, from geography to physics.
Educational software structured by age, free software from various prestigious universities.
Very interesting section of astronomy, a bunch of programs that install very easily with just one click. The Debian based system is very solid and moves fast. Of course there is much to be done, but the beginning is promising

I used AcademiX for a long time with my students. Personally I consider it can be improved by including other programming IDE. But consider graphical interface, its functionality, short time on booting, stability as a OS, existence of installing manual, bug report functionality and intuitive structure of EDU app for installing programs, I can rate this distribution by 9 from 10.

Altough AcademiX GNU/Linux is orientated to education, enyone could use this distro as regular user. Lightweight CD_iso therefore starts fast.
Awesome on my desktop, upto 10-15 minutes easy install, no issues to me, works out-of-the-box. Besides that I tested a lot of beta versions, I decided to use AcademiX GNU/Linux 2.2 stable on my daily working machine.
